Delhi Government is planning to launch a unique Overseas Scholarship Scheme for Dalit Student, according to a recent update. The Aam Aadmi Party led Delhi Government is planning to start a scheme to fund the study of around 100 Dalit students who wish to pursue their higher education overseas. According to the Press Release, meritorious students from the National Capital who are planning to join M.Phil and Ph.D. courses in a variety of fields including art, agriculture, law, medicine, and engineering, etc, will be eligible for Scholarship under this scheme.
Delhi Government’s SC & ST Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam said that the proposal in this regard was soon to be presented before the cabinet. Further sharing the details, Gautam said that, Delhi Government will provide financial assistance of upto Rs 10 lakh for a course of two years and upto Rs 20 lakh for a course of 4 years, to over 100 candidates under this scheme. This would be first such scheme to be introduced by Delhi Government and will benefit students from socially deprived sections.
He also added that only those candidates who have family income of below Rs 6 lakhs will be eligible to seek benefit of the Overseas Scholarship Scheme. The minister further added that “Pursuing higher studies abroad costs a great deal of money. We have no dearth of talented people who can accomplish anything given equal opportunities. The AAP government has decided to hold their hand.”
In 2018, the Delhi Government also launched the ‘Jai Bhim Mukhyemantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana’, under which free coaching was provided to Dalit Students for various competitive entrance exams examinations. For the first year, a total of 107 students were given free coaching for engineering and medical entrance exams. Of this, 35 students have qualified in the recently concluded JEE Main and NEET 2019 exam. Similarly, for competitive exams, a total of 4,953 students enrolled for availing coaching for various exams including UPSC Civil Services, SSC, Banking, Railway Recruitment Board and Delhi SSCB and Insurance Exams.
